Module V: Neonatal and Pediatric Wound Care:
Best Practices for Our Smallest Patients

Wound care for pre-term infants, neonates and children presents unique challenges. Healing is often quick but skin is thinner and more fragile than that of adult skin. This program reviews the skin and its structures with specific wound healing information for the neonatal and pediatric populations. Also included is a review of appropriate dressings in order to optimize healing outcomes.

Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program participants will be able to:

  • Identify the challenges of wound care in the neonatal and pediatric population

  • Examine the differences between the skin of the neonate and child and that of an adult

  • Identify risk factors for skin breakdown in neonatal and pediatric patient populations

  • Review the types of wounds frequently seen in this population

  • Identify topical wound dressings that can be safely used for children
